Exeter Airport offers flights to Ivalo in December.
Ivalo being 150 miles in the Arctic circle has cold winters to surprisingly mild summers. With the average temperature of the coldest month being around -14ºC reaching to the highs during the warmest month of around 14ºC so the traveller would be wise to bring their warmer clothing and swimming costume (see below).
Ivalo has many tourists who like to visit during the colder months due the wide variety of winter sports on offer. The traveller can try their hand or feet at sports including skiing, both cross country and downhill, snowboarding and rides in sleighs pulled by huskies or reindeers. There are safaris offered with a difference as you will be in charge off a quadbike equipped with safety belts, power steering and a roll cage, then there is the smoke sauna evening, not for the faint hearted. There are two electrically heated saunas (separate for men and women) or the traditional smoke sauna shared by men and women to visit either before or after the traveller ties the swimming pool in the ice where the water temperature is on average -1ºC. However, arguably the main attraction and one never to be forgotten is the Northern lights safari. With this tour, you will board a snow mobile and make your way to the fells of Saariselka where you will stop to view the quite mesmerising sight of the Aurora Borealis.
There is also the Karhunpesakivi Rock which is some 20 miles North of Ivalo and is a formation shaped like a giant’s kettle. It is the only structure in the world that has shifted from its original location because of the ice age.
