Guernsey, which is part of the Channel Islands and a Crown dependency, lays in the English Channel not far from the beaches of Normandy and if often mistakenly thought of as part of the United Kingdom. This is not the case and is a Crown dependency only and sets its own laws and has its own elected government. It has close ties with both the United Kingdom and France and as such the culture has merged in this charming Island.
Guernsey has mild winters and cooler summers on average than the UK with the average winter temperature during the coldest months being about 5ºC and the summer reaches an average temperature during the warmest months of 20ºC but can reach as high as the very low 30’sºC.
Guernsey offers plenty of amenities for the traveller. Being an island there are plenty of water sports on offer and you can try your hand at surfing or the more relaxed hiring a Kayak and Kayaking around the southern coves of the island. You can take leisurely walks around the island or play a round on of golf on one of the many well maintained gold courses.
For a unique experience, Guernsey Aero Club offers the traveller a trial flying lesson where you can fly around the island.
A real treat for any literary fan is the chance to visit Hauteville House the home of Victor Hugo during his 15 years’ exile on the island. The crystal room (his writing room) is at the top of the house and has wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Walk through the house and maybe you will find the inspiration to write a Les Miserables or a Toilers of the Sea.
