Exeter Airport offers flights to Enontekio in December for that special Christmas treat.
Enontekio is beautiful in its crisp whiteness during the winter months where snow lays heavily on the ground and the average temperature in December is about -9ºC and the snow depth can be more than 50cm deep. This will mean more than one extra jumper will be needed if you plan to experience all Enontekio has to offer.
Enontekio is a wonder of nature and most but not all of its attractions lay in the nature. There are at least 5 large waterfalls to visit such as Isokurkkio or Munnikurkkio and getting there can be as much fun as being there. You can choose from snow shoe treks, snow mobile safaris, hiking or the more extreme white water rafting. Any of the ways you choose to travel will make a lasting impression but if you wish to travel as a more sedate pace for a leisurely sightseeing tour then you can choose to experience a sleigh ride pulled either by horses, reindeer or huskies.
For spectacular views of Enontekio a visit to the Yrjo Kokko bird tower is a must it overlooks the river Ounasjoki and the surrounding land. There are also a few visitor centres to visit in the National park and fell Lapland’s.
During the evenings as you reflect on what has occurred during the day you can eat at one of the many restaurants either in the village or in the hotels and try some local Lap Cuisine such as some of the fresh caught fish from the local lakes or rivers or even try reindeer steaks or moose osso-bucco.
There are also a few museums to visit which show the history of Enontekio and how the culture and influence of neighbouring countries has shaped the Lapland today.
